Relatively few black, white families moving into multi-ethnic neighborhoods

WASHINGTON, DC, May 29, 2012 Despite increasing numbers of multiethnic neighborhoods in the United States, relatively few black or white families are actually moving into these types of communities, according to a new study in the June issue of the American Sociological Review.

"We pay a lot of attention to this proliferation of multiethnic neighborhoods, but they are still only a small part of the overall inter-neighborhood mobility picture for blacks and whites," said Kyle Crowder, a Professor of Sociology at the University of Washington and lead author of the study. "Blacks tend to originate in neighborhoods with very high concentrations of blacks and, when they move, they tend to move to other places that have very high concentrations of blacks. Their typical destination is not a multiethnic neighborhood. The same is even more true for whites."

Titled, "Neighborhood Diversity, Metropolitan Constraints, and Household Migration," the study considers mobility patterns of 44,808 black families and 57,415 white families, some of whom moved several times between 1977 and 2005, the period covered by the analysis. The study, which looks at moves families made from one neighborhood in a metropolitan area to another neighborhood in the same metropolitan area, relies on multiple sources of data, including the Panel Study of Income Dynamicsa nationally representative, longitudinal survey of U.S. residentsand the 1980, 1990, and 2000 U.S. Censuses.

According to the study, of the 9,940 moves that black families made between 1977 and 2005, 43.7 percent (4,340) were to predominately black neighborhoods, 5 percent (494) were to predominately white neighborhoods, 17.7 percent (1,763) were to multiethnic neighborhoods (whose populations were at least 10 percent black, at least 10 percent Hispanic or Asian, and at least 40 percent white), and 33.6 percent (3,343) were to other types of neighborhoods detailed in the analysis. By comparison, of the 8,823 moves that white families made during the same time period, 56.8 percent (5,008) were to predominately white neighborhoods, 2 percent (179) were to predominately black neighborhoods, 5.6 percent (493) were to multiethnic neighborhoods, and 35.6 percent (3,143) were to other types of neighborhoods.

"Our study tells a somewhat pessimistic story, but it's also a realistic story," said Crowder, who coauthored the analysis with Jeremy Pais, an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Connecticut, and Scott J. South, a Professor of Sociology at the University of Albany, SUNY. "It's a story that counters this idea that we should stop paying attention to residential segregation. The truth is, when it comes to eliminating residential segregation, we still have a long way to go. This becomes particularly clear when we look at the high percentage of black families from predominately black neighborhoods and the even higher percentage of white families from predominately white neighborhoods who wind up in homogeneous communities when they move."

The study found that of the 3,684 moves that black families made from predominately black neighborhoods between 1977 and 2005, 60.9 percent (2,245) were to other predominately black neighborhoods, 2 percent (74) were to predominately white neighborhoods, 18.9 percent (696) were to multiethnic neighborhoods, and 18.2 percent (669) were to other types of neighborhoods. By comparison, of the 4,987 moves that white families made from predominately white neighborhoods during the same time period, 74.9 percent (3,734) were to other predominately white neighborhoods, 1.5 percent (73) were to predominately black neighborhoods, 2.4 percent (120) were to multiethnic neighborhoods, and just over 21 percent (1,060) were to other types of neighborhoods.

Crowder said it is important to note thatafter controlling for other factorsthe year in which black and white families moved had little or no impact on the kinds of neighborhoods to which they moved. "For black families, year of move is statistically non-significant and for white families it has a minimal impact," Crowder said. "So, by itself, year doesn't seem to be a very important indicator of where blacks and whites movedand there wasn't much change in where blacks and whites moved over time, once we account for other factors that affect destinations."

Interestingly, the study also found that the tendency for white and black families to move between neighborhoods dominated by their own racial group varies significantly across metropolitan areas. "The mobility of black and white families into more integrated neighborhoods is shaped substantially by demographic, economic, political, and spatial features of the broader metropolitan area," Crowder said.

According to the study, metropolitan area characteristics likely to limit residential integration for blacks and whites include: high levels of existing residential segregation and poverty as well as a significant percentage of the population living in the suburbs. "Lower levels of these characteristics promote integration," Crowder said. "Additionally, mobility into more diverse neighborhoods is more common in metropolitan areas with large supplies of new housing and relatively large concentrations of racial and ethnic minorities."

In terms of policy implications, Crowder said the study highlights the need for policymakers to continue working on ways to address residential segregation. "Residential segregation influences such things as the concentration and the propagation of crime as well as racial disparities in health and in exposure to pollution," Crowder said. "When people say, 'Segregation is going away' and 'We don't need to worry about it anymore,' those are messages that people will latch onto quickly. Unfortunately, those types of statements are just untrue."

New properties of carbon material graphene discovered

ScienceDaily (May 30, 2012) ? Graphene has caused a lot of excitement among scientists since the extremely strong and thin carbon material was discovered in 2004. Just one atom thick, the honeycomb-shaped material has several remarkable properties combining mechanical toughness with superior electrical and thermal conductivity.

Now a group of scientists at Iowa State University, led by physicist Jigang Wang, has shown that graphene has two other properties that could have applications in high-speed telecommunications devices and laser technology -- population inversion of electrons and broadband optical gain.

Wang is an assistant professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University. He also is an associate scientist with the Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory.

Wang's team flashed extremely short laser pulses on graphene. The researchers immediately discovered a new photo-excited graphene state characterized by a broadband population inversion of electrons. Under normal conditions, most electrons would occupy low-energy states and just a few would populate higher-energy states. In population-inverted states, this situation is reversed: more electrons populate higher, rather than lower, energy states. Such population inversions are very rare in nature and can have highly unusual properties. In graphene, the new state produces an optical gain from the infrared to the visible.

Simply stated, optical gain means more visible light comes out than goes in. This can only happen when the gain medium is externally pumped and then stimulated with light (stimulated emission). Wang's discovery could open doors for efficient amplifiers in the telecommunication industry and extremely fast opto-electronics devices.

Graphene as a gain medium for light amplification

"It's very exciting," Wang said. "It opens the possibility of using graphene as a gain medium for light amplification. It could be used in making broadband optical amplifiers or high-speed modulators for telecommunications. It even provides implications for development of graphene-based lasers."

Wang's team unveiled its findings in the journal Physical Review Letters on April 16. In addition to Wang, the paper's other authors are Tianq Li, Liang Luo and Junhua Zhang, Iowa State physics graduate students; Miron Hupalo, Ames Laboratory scientist; and Michael Tringides and J?rg Schmalian, Iowa State physics professors and Ames Laboratory scientists.

Wang is a member of the Condensed Matter Physics program at Iowa State and the Ames Laboratory. He and his team conduct optical experiments using laser spectroscopy techniques, from the visible to the mid-infrared and far-infrared spectrum. They use ultrashort laser pulses down to 10 quadrillionths of a second to study the world of nanoscience and correlated electron materials.

In 2004 United Kingdom researchers Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov discovered graphene, which led to their winning the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics. Graphene is a two-dimensional (height and width) material with a growing list of known unique properties. It is a single layer of carbon only one atom thick. The carbon atoms are connected in a hexagonal lattice that looks like a honeycomb. Despite a lack of bulk, graphene is stronger than steel, it conducts electricity as well as copper and conducts heat even better. It is also flexible and nearly transparent.

An understanding gap existed, Wang explained, between the two scientific communities that studied the electronic and photonic properties of graphene. He believed his group could help bridge the gap by elaborating the non-linear optical properties of graphene and understanding the non-equilibrium electronic state. Wang explained that linear optical properties only transmit light -- one light signal comes into a material and one comes out. "The non-linear property can change and modulate the signal, not just transmit it, producing functionality for novel device applications."

Graphene in a highly non-linear state

Wang said other scientists have studied graphene's optical properties, but primarily in the linear regime. His team hypothesized they could generate a new "very unconventional state" of graphene resulting in population inversion and optical gain.

"We were the first group to break new ground, to start looking at it in a highly excited state consisting of extremely dense electrons -- a highly non-linear state. In such a state, graphene has unique properties."

Wang's group started with high-quality graphene monolayers grown by Hupalo and Tringides in the Ames Laboratory. The researchers used an ultrafast laser to "excite" the material's electrons with short pulses of light just 35 femtoseconds long (35 quadrillionths of a second). Through measurements of the photo-induced electronic states, Wang's team found that optical conductivity (or absorption) of the graphene layers changed from positive to negative -- resulting in the optical gain -- when the pump pulse energy was increased above a threshold.

The results indicated that the population inverted state in photoexcited graphene emitted more light than it absorbed. "The absorption was negative. It meant that population inversion is indeed established in the excited graphene and more light came out of the inverted medium than what entered, which is optical gain," Wang said. "The light emitted shows gain of about one percent for a layer a mere one atom thick, a figure on the same order to what's seen in conventional semiconductor optical amplifiers hundreds of times thicker."

The key to the experiments, of course, was creating the highly non-linear state, something "that does not normally exist in thermal equilibrium," Wang said. "You cannot simply put graphene under the light and study it. You have to really excite the electrons with the ultrafast laser pulse and have the knowledge on the threshold behaviors to arrive at such a state."

Wang said a great deal more engineering and materials perfection lies ahead before graphene's full potential for lasers and optical telecommunications is ever realized. "The research clearly shows, though, that lighting up graphenes may produce brighter emissions as well as a bright future," he said.

If You Do Research On The Web You Really Need An Internet Spam ...

Spam has got to be one of the most annoying things on the Internet today. I remember when pop-ups first came on the scene, every website I went to was inundated with tons of pop-ups, I hated them, and I?m sure I wasn?t alone. Spam flooded the Internet with so many copies of the same messages, it?s a very shameful attempt to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it. Most spam is commercial advertising of get-rich-quick schemes, or products for younger looking skin. There are basically two types of spam and they affect Internet users differently. Cancelable Usenet spam is a single message sent to many Usenet spam is aimed at people who read newsgroups but rarely or never post and give their address away. Usenet spam robs users of the utility of the newsgroups by overwhelming them with a barrage of advertising or other irrelevant posts. Email spam is another type of spam that targets individual users with direct mail messages. Email spam lists are usually created by scanning Usenet postings and stealing Internet mailing lists, or searching for Web addresses. What ever IT is, it?s not wanted and thank goodness there are plenty of websites were they will allow you to download free spam blockers. Internet spam filters are a good way to block those pesky spam pop-ups, in fact, without them, there really is no way to get from website to website without Internet spam filters today. Even with spam filters, some pop-up can still get through. However, most Internet spam filters can recognize more than 98% of all incoming spam. There are Plugins that can be installed on your computer that will increase your Internet spam filters to the program. A Spamihilator does just what it says, it annihilates spam and e-mail spam. Most are freeware applications that works in conjunction with other Internet spam filters and some will send you a daily report by e-mail if you want that will tell you how much spam you receive during that day while you were online. This way, you can restore false-positives or add the senders to your friends or block them completely. You can create your own language file by editing an XML file. There are many good Internet spam filters you can trust to download on your computer today. It is a Federal offense for anyone who knowingly, with the intent to carry on any activity which would be a Federal or State crime of fraud or identity theft. Also in one ?creates or procures the creation of a website or domain name that represents itself as a legitimate online business, without the authority or approval of the registered owner of the actual website or domain name of the legitimate online business and uses that website or domain name shall be fined under this title or imprisoned up to five years or both.

Detroit woman gives birth, days after fire attack

(AP) ? Police say a Detroit woman whose ex-boyfriend allegedly tried to have her killed to prevent her from having his child has given birth to a boy.

Warren deputy police commissioner Louis Galasso says Latonya Bowman's son was delivered via an emergency cesarean section early Tuesday. He didn't know if the C-section was needed because of Saturday's attack.

The child's father and another man are expected to be arraigned later Tuesday on attempted murder charges.

Police say the second man abducted the 22-year-old Bowman while she was dropping her ex-boyfriend off after a night out. They say the man bound her in tape, doused her in lighter fluid and set her on fire. They say he then shot her and fled while she played dead.

Bowman is expected to recover.

'War criminal': UK ex-PM Blair heckled while testifying

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair was accused of being "a war criminal" by a heckler who burst into a courtroom as he testified at an U.K. inquiry into media ethics on Monday.

By NBC News' Baruch Ben-Chorin and msnbc.com's Alastair Jamieson

Updated at 10:49 a.m. ET: LONDON - Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair was accused of being "a war criminal" by a heckler who burst into a courtroom as he testifed at an U.K. inquiry into media ethics on Monday.?

The protester, who gave his name as?David Lawley-Wakelin,?shouted?that Blair?should be arrested -- but only seconds later he was?bundled away by security staff.

He yelled at Blair, who is a?$2.5-million-a-year adviser to U.S. investment bank JP Morgan:?"This man should be arrested for war crimes. JP Morgan paid him off for the Iraq war, three months after he invaded Iraq."?

In response to the outburst, Blair said: "Can I just say on the record what he said about Iraq and JP Morgan is completely and totally untrue. I have never had a?discussion with them about that."

Lawley-Wakelin describes himself online as?a documentary film-maker working on a project called the "The Alternative Iraq Enquiry", for which he has traveled to Iraq.

ITV News reported he was being questioned by police, but later released.

Sky News reported that an investigation was immediately launched into how he entered the secure area of the court - an embarrassing breach of security less than a year after Rupert Murdoch was hit by a custard pie at a inquiry into the same subject at Britain's parliament.

Prior to the interruption, Blair was facing questions about his relationship with Murdoch.

Blair, who served as prime minister between 1997 and 2007, was the latest senior politician?to appear?at the investigation set up last year in the wake of a phone-hacking scandal when it emerged that reporters at the Murdoch-owned News of the World tabloid had routinely hacked into the phones of public figures. Other witnesses have included actor Hugh Grant, as well as Murdoch and his son James.

More coverage from Britain's ITV News

Blair is godfather to one of the powerful News Corp. chairman and CEO.'s children.

Ordered by Prime Minister David Cameron, the inquiry has tarnished Britain's elite by laying bare the collusion between politicians, the police and the media.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair testified this morning about his close ties to media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who's News of the World tabloid is in the middle of a phone-hacking scandal. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

While Blair is no longer active in British politics, the inquiry may still prove uncomfortable as it examines issues such as his decision after stepping down as prime minister to become a godfather to Murdoch's daughter Grace at a ceremony on the banks of the River Jordan.

"Blair led the way in having no shame about courting Murdoch," said Ivor Gaber, professor of political journalism at City University. "He set the style and the standard and if you regard Cameron as the 'heir to Blair' then it's not exactly surprising that he followed suit."

The BBC reported that, giving evidence earlier in May, one of Mr Blair's former Cabinet ministers told the inquiry he felt the relationship had "arguably" become "closer than wise".

Murdoch told the inquiry last month that he had never asked a prime minister for anything.

Blair set the tone for his relationship with Britain's press when he flew to Australia in 1995 to speak before a gathering of Murdoch's executives who had previously used their British tabloids to vilify his Labour Party predecessors.

'Into the lion's den'
The decision infuriated much of his left-of-center party who saw the Australian-born tycoon as a right-winger who had helped to keep them out of power for years.

"People would be horrified," Blair said later in his autobiography. "On the other hand ... not to go was to say 'carry on and do your worst,' and we knew their worst was very bad indeed."

Former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks and her husband, Charlie Brooks, have been charged with perverting the course of justice during the U.K. phone hacking scandal. ITV's Keir Simmons reports.

"The country's most powerful newspaper proprietor, whose publications have hitherto been rancorous in their opposition to the Labour party, invites us into the lion's den. You go, don't you?"

With the backing of Murdoch's top-selling Sun tabloid, Blair swept to power in 1997 and again in 2001 and 2005. But with an ever-increasing reputation for public relations "spin", he started to face questions over his sincerity.

"Tony Blair quickly became famous in Fleet Street for inviting in one group of newspaper people and telling them how skeptical he was about Europe; and then inviting in another lot and telling them how keen he was on Europe," Andrew Marr, a senior BBC journalist, told the inquiry.

May 1: Rupert and James Murdoch are severely criticized after investigations into phone-hacking allegations - and three of their senior executives are accused of misleading parliament. ITN's Juliet Bremner reports.?

"But the different groups compared notes, and his reputation was not hugely enhanced."

Much of that came to a head when Blair and then President George W. Bush agreed to invade Iraq, going against the public opinion in Britain.

Blair is likely to be asked why he spoke to Murdoch three times in the days leading up to the Iraq war and whether this had any impact on the fact that all Murdoch's papers supported the unpopular invasion.

Rupert Murdoch returned to the Leveson Inquiry to give evidence for a second day. ITV's Paul Davis reports.

He will also be asked whether his reliance on Britain's press meant that he did not properly scrutinize their role in society and whether any group, such as Murdoch's UK arm, News International, had too much control of the market.

"There was a desperation to get the Sun onside and to get News International on side, basically at all costs," Liverpool University's political professor Jonathan Tonge, told Reuters. "And if that meant sacrificing a serious analysis of the relationship and the health of the relationship, then so be it."?

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

350-Year-Old Newton's Puzzle Solved By 16-Year-Old

First time accepted submitter johnsnails writes "A German 16-year-old, Shouryya Ra, solved two fundamental particle dynamic theories posed by Sir Isaac Newton, which until recently required the use of powerful computers. He worked out how to calculate exactly the path of a projectile under gravity and subject to air resistance. Shouryya solved the problem while working on a school project. From the article: 'Mr Ray won a research award for his efforts and has been labeled a genius by the German media, but he put it down to "curiosity and schoolboy naivety." "When it was explained to us that the problems had no solutions, I thought to myself, 'well, there's no harm in trying,'" he said.'"

Last Republican debate tonight; Kaine GOP debate tour continues

Last Republican debate tonight; Kaine GOP debate tour continues
By JR Hoeft | Friday, May 25th, 2012 | Politics

One of the easiest jobs in all of Virginia has to be the campaign scheduler for Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine.

You see, not a lot of thought needs to go into it. Especially since Kaine managed to get all of his Democratic opposition to quit the nomination race early, allowing him to focus on the Republicans running.

All the scheduler seems to have to do is see where a newsworthy Republican event is, like debates, and schedule a unique Kaine event there.

Make no mistake, this is intentional.

The Kaine campaign in each debate has attempted to hijack any media attention the debates might get. Doing so gives Kaine and his surrogates an unchecked platform to lob pot-shots at his Republican opponents (while the Republicans are busy arguing with each other).

The Republican debate schedule was announced in mid-April for Roanoke, Virginia Beach, and Northern Virginia.

* The first debate in Roanoke was Saturday, April 28th. Therefore, the Kaine campaign announced, ?On Saturday, Tim Kaine will hold a roundtable with Roanoke seniors and retirees, followed by a downtown business walking tour with Mayor David Bowers.?

* The second debate was held Friday, May 11th in Virginia Beach. Conveniently, ?First Lady Anne Holton, joined Congressman Bobby Scott and 2nd district congressional candidate Paul Hirschbiel, and more than 120 Virginia Democrats to open the Norfolk/Virginia Beach Headquarters of the Democratic Party of Virginia?s 2012 coordinated campaign,? according to a Kaine statement.

* The final debate, tonight, 6:30 p.m., is in Falls Church, Virginia. Of course, Kaine will be in Northern Virginia to ?hold a forum with Northern Virginia women to discuss his vision for creating jobs and strengthening our economy.?

At some point, presumably June 13, the Kaine campaign will have to come up with their own schedule.

Regarding tonight?s debate, you don?t have to travel to Northern Virginia. Just grab some popcorn and get a head-start on your Memorial Day weekend by watching the last debate right here:

Stream videos at Ustream

We will also be covering/following the debate using the primary Twitter hashtag #vasen. However, you also might want to consider using #rpv, #vagop, or #bdrift. But #vasen is generally where the fireworks are though ? just like Kaine, you?re bound to get some lurkers on the left who are quick to chime-in:

And, as always, there?s Cover-it Live:

So, from here on out?open-thread. Enjoy the debate!

Yankton Archery Complex Becomes Destination For National Training

By Nathan Johnson nathan.johnson@yankton.net

Published:?Thursday, May 24, 2012 1:09 AM CDT

With archery gaining in popularity across the United States, people from around the nation are at the NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Complex this week to learn more about the sport and take those ideas back home. The first set of eyes on the facility is a small group of parks and recreation officials who are participating in a week-long educational course sponsored by the Easton Foundation. According to Doug Engh, outreach director for the Easton Foundation, the program was initiated this year in collaboration with the National Recreation and Park Association to train city and county parks and rec officials about how to run a commercial archery program. A total of six individuals received grants to visit Yankton, and another six were chosen to go to the Easton Newberry (Fla.) Sports Complex. Participants are taught to deal with training volunteer staffs, managing a budget and converting a facility to archery uses, among other things. ?They are not only learning the commercial aspects of the sport but also being trained and certified as level two instructors through USA Archery and the National Field Archery Association,? Engh said. ?That makes it so they can go back and train level-one instructors in a one-day class.? In addition to the training, the officials receive $5,000 to purchase archery equipment to improve their programs or get them up and running.

Also Wednesday, Gene Sherry, executive director of Georgia Southern University?s campus recreation and intramurals, was at the Yankton complex for a site visit. The university in Statesboro, Ga., is currently in the planning stages of a joint archery and firearms facility, and is looking at Yankton and other locations for ideas. ?Archery is a large, large sport and very inclusive,? Sherry said. ?From a recreational director standpoint, it is something you should strive to have in your program because the age level, strength level, speed level or size level doesn?t matter.? Georgia Southern began discussion of its facility almost two years ago and hopes to break ground in the fall. Sherry called the Yankton complex an outstanding example. ?When you have designated space of this magnitude to a sport, it is really doing it right,? he said. ?This expansion (to an indoor 70-meter range) is awesome.? It was hard to convince Georgia Southern and other universities that are pursuing archery centers to make such a leap in the past because there was no model to show them, Engh said. ?(Sherry) might have been pitched on an idea, but he doesn?t want to take the risk of an unproven sport,? he stated. ?Now, he can see the partnerships Yankton has and its expansions.? Meanwhile, in a classroom at the complex, archery coach M.J. Rogers taught a group of three parks and rec officials. It consisted of Robin Bonaventura of Cincinnati, Jered Hoover of Woodstock, Va., and John Corriveau of Saginaw, Mich. Each has a different level of experience with archery. Bonaventura is already a level-two instructor and has been involved with an archery program for some time. Corriveau has overseen an archery program for a couple of years, and Hoover had never shot a bow prior to Wednesday. ?I feel like, being here, I?m learning from one of the best coaches in the country at a great facility,? Hoover said. ?The way I look at it, I?m leaving here in pretty good shape. ?Archery in our county needs an uplifting of some sort,? he continued. ?This is the perfect way to get it started. It?s been a blessing seeing the knowledge and facility here, because it leads me to know I can do something in my community.? With the experience and contacts he is making in the Yankton class, Corriveau said he hopes to reach his goal of building an indoor archery facility within the next five years. He said programs like this in his profession are rare ? and the money to buy equipment after completion is even rarer. With budget constraints around the country, it is difficult for such a program to get started. ?Thanks to this, you get the equipment so the (community) doesn?t have to spend any money, and they get to see the results,? Corriveau said. ?We go home with the capability of hitting the ground running. That?s crucial.? Bonaventura acknowledged that archery is popular because it is accessible to people of various skills and physical abilities, but added, ?It also helps that Hollywood is helping us (with ?The Hunger Games? movie).? Rogers said it has been a challenge teaching an archery class with such a diverse skill level among participants. However, he hopes the final impact is the same on all the students. ?They are going to be back home like mosquitoes in a nudist colony,? he stated. ?They are going to want to indoctrinate everyone they see. The caution is, they are going to have to feed that out in bits and pieces.? You can follow Nathan Johnson on Twitter at?twitter.com/AnInlandVoyage

Gaming Urban Legends - Monsters of San Andreas and Reviving ...

We?ve talked about gaming?s urban legends before here on G4, but there?s plenty left to explore. That still baffle gamers today and leave them wondering whether they could change their most influential childhood gaming moment -- when Aeris died. Or that time that their friend swore they saw Bigfoot in the woods of San Andreas. We?ve got you covered.

Bigfoot

Finding Bigfoot in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

With a vast terrain, Rockstar had plenty of space to leave in some tasty secrets for gamers to dig up while exploring their worlds. There?s been a few in every Rockstar game, but almost all of them have been found and proven -- except for one. There?s talk of monsters roaming the hills of San Andreas, but not just any monsters: Bigfoot and Leatherface specifically.

This is probably one of the biggest urban legends in gaming, that a creature could roam around a world map that players can dissect, yet it somehow manages to escape capture for proof, just like in real life. It?s a bit silly to think that this could happen, but at the time, the proof was somewhat convincing. The legend was originally propagated through blurry photos showing up on message boards. These showed distorted glimpses of the beasts.

However, it should be noted that the PS2-era wasn?t HD by any means and it was fairly easy to manipulate a photo to look like the somewhat blocky-shaped characters. It wouldn?t have been hard to fake, especially with the low textures that the characters had at the time.

As the legend goes, players would drive into the wooded areas of ?Back o Beyond? and Mount Chiliad as the in-game clock hit midnight and the daylight was replaced with spooky fog. If they were lucky, or unlucky rather, they might have a chance to stumble upon Bigfoot. He was a supposed one-hit kill, so some players thought they might prove his existence by standing in the middle of the forest and leaving the game running, in hopes that they would awake outside the hospital the next day. It didn?t happen.

With only muddy photos as proof, there wasn?t much evidence to support this claim though. Videos began surfacing showing the beast caught on film. It was a bit weird that all of a sudden, multiple players are catching him on film. It turned out that this wasn?t real and was actually created using mods on the PC version of the game. Fans of the legend saw this as the final nail in the its coffin and a sign to give up.

Further proof that it was a hoax was provided when Terry Donovan, Former CEO of Rockstar, told EGM in issue #187 that ?there is no Bigfoot, just like in real life.? They even went as far as to put a sasquatch hunting mission in Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare that, when you kill a sasquatch, awards you with an achievement titled ?Six Years In The Making? in reference to the release of San Andreas. I?d say it?s pretty safe to call this one a hoax.

The situation is pretty similar for Leatherface. There wasn?t much proof to go on, other than random forum posts claiming to have seem him the woods. (There?s a trend going on here...) As the legend goes, players that visited the lumbermill that is directly in the center of the map would get a little surprise at exactly midnight. That surprise being the rumbling of Leatherface?s chainsaw.. right before he killed them. Only this wasn?t how things went down at all, there wasn?t any murderer in the forest, just a lumbermill. It was all a ruse, a very clever one, but a ruse none the less. Like Bigfoot, Leatherface did make an appearance in the PC version of the game via the addition of mods, but was nowhere to be found in the original, unmodified game.

Final Fantasy VII

Reviving Aeris

Looking back fondly on their memories of playing through Final Fantasy VII, some might call Aeris gaming?s White Swan, which might explain why so many followed this urban legend so closely.

After the release of Final Fantasy VII in Japan, gamers were notably upset over the death of Aeris. Rumors began to circulate that there was something different about the US version of the game, that there was something hidden. It turned out to be additional content on the disc. They believed that this addition would allow players to bring her back to life. While most dismissed it as nothing more than here-say, hardcore fans were undeterred, claiming that a new item and cutscene were on the disc.

They used this additional content as a basis for their claim that this item was used to revive Aeris and the FMV cutscene would show the whole thing go down. Unfortunately for them, the new item ?Underwater Materia? was simply a random item that was used against Emerald Weapon, which was shown in this new FMV sequence. That?s it -- a pretty big let down for these die-hard fans.

There is a way to bring her back to your party through the use of a Gameshark, a cheat code device used in the PS1/N64-era, but it didn?t net players much. There were no character specific interactions that played out any differently to suggest that there was a way to revive her through normal gameplay. She interacted as her character would, but only through the general character quotes, nothing special.

It was unfortunate for players that this didn?t work. But then again, it?s a Final Fantasy game, characters die. That?s how things work and you shouldn?t be able to change that. There?s a narrative reason that she was killed off and Square would have changed that if they felt that it didn?t better the player?s bond with the characters.

Are we totally off base? Have you seen Bigfoot (in-game or in real life)? Let us know in the comments what you think about these and what some of your favorite urban legends are. There?s dozens more out there, you just have to find them.

Calorie Restricted Diet Decreases Breast Cancer Biomarkers in Post ...

Although, much of the discussion around the health risks of obesity tends to focus around diabetes and heart disease, it is important not to forget that in women, excess weight is closely linked to the risk for post-menopausal breast cancer (by far the most common form of breast cancer).

Now, a team of researchers led by Kristin Campbell from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, in a paper published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, shows that weight loss achieved by calorie restriction and exercise can significantly reduce circulating levels of the sex-hormones implicated in the development of post-menopausal breast cancer.

The single-blind, 12-month, randomized controlled trial was conducted in 50 to 75 year-old women with a BMI greater than 25, who were assigned to one of three intervention groups: (1) reduced-calorie weight loss diet (?diet?; n = 118), (2) moderate- to vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise (?exercise?; n = 117), (3) combined reduced-calorie weight loss diet and moderate- to vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise (?diet + exercise?; n = 117), or (4) control (n = 87).

The weight loss diet intervention was a modification of the dietary component of the Diabetes Prevention Program36 and the Look AHEAD (Action for Health in Diabetes) lifestyle intervention programs, with a goal of daily energy intake of 1200 to 2000 kcal/d based on baseline weight, less than 30% daily energy intake from fat, and a 10% reduction in body weight by 6 months with maintenance to 12 months.

The exercise intervention goal was 45 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise, 5 days per week (225 minutes/wk). Each week, participants attended three monitored exercise sessions at the study facility and two at home. The program progressed to the maintenance target of 70% to 85% maximal heart rate for 45 minutes by week. Activities with four or more metabolic equivalents,38 such as brisk walking, were counted toward the prescribed exercise target.

These interventions resulted in significant weight loss at 12 months: diet alone and diet + exercise resulted in about 11-12 Kg weight loss, exercise alone resulted in about 3.5 Kg weight loss, the control group lost no weight.

Compared with controls, estrone decreased 9.6% with diet, 5.5% with exercise, and 11.1% with diet + exercise.

Estradiol decreased 16.2% with diet, 4.9% with exercise, and 20.3% with diet + exercise.

Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) increased 22.4% with diet and 25.8% with diet + exercise.

Free estradiol decreased 21.4% with diet and 26.0% with diet + exercise.

Free testosterone decreased 10.0% with diet and 15.6% with diet + exercise.

Thus, weight loss significantly lowered serum estrogens and free testosterone, findings that support the notion that weight loss can likely reduce risk for breast caner by lowering the exposure to breast cancer biomarkers.

It may be worth recalling, that surgical weight loss studies have shown a remarkable 60% decrease in cancer mortality, including a reduction in breast cancers.

Thus, the potential of obesity treatment as a means to reducing breast cancer risk should not be underestimated.

Glutamine: The ultimate healing supplement

(NaturalNews) The healing powers of glutamine are vast and understated. This completely safe and natural amino acid supplement has been studied for the past 15 years for its unique and compelling healing properties. It is now clear to researchers that glutamine is key in healing the body from certain diseases and ailments.

Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the blood stream, and while the body is able to produce the amino acid, it becomes unable to produce sufficient amounts of it during times of stress. This makes it a conditionally essential amino acid. Conditionally essential amino acids must be obtained from dietary sources or supplements when the body is unable to produce enough of them. Times of stress include anytime the body has undergone trauma or contracted illness or disease that it must heal from.

It is estimated that 6 percent of people carry the ulcer causing bacteria their stomach, H. pylori. The antibiotics typically used to treat H. pylori can cause side effects and create a resistance in the bacteria. Research now shows that glutamine supplementation can safely and effectively protect against and repair the damage caused by H. pylori. Glutamine is the single most prescribed ulcer medication in Asia.

Glutamine plays an important role in strengthening the lining if the gut. With the many chemicals the human stomach is exposed to these days, there is a good chance your gut may require some maintenance and repair. Gut health is necessary and essential for overall health and well being.

Even serious gastrointestinal and digestive diseases such as Crohn's, IBS and Colitis can see substantial improvement with glutamine supplementation. Glutamine supplies fuel for fast multiplying cells, such as those in the gastrointestinal systems. Many of the drugs used to treat these diseases only mask the symptoms, while causing serious side effects. On the other hand, there are studies in which patients of these diseases have seen nearly complete recovery with glutamine supplementation alone.

Glutamine is also useful for treating diarrhea, as it decreases loss of electrolytes and water from the small intestines. Glutamine's role in the health and healing of the gut and intestines is unparalleled.

Hospital acquired infections greatly increase the mortality rates of post surgery patients and are responsible for up to $33 billion in preventable health care costs. A 2010 meta-analysis of 14 studies (published in "Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition") where intravenous glutamine was administered in critically ill surgical patients, showed that glutamine significantly reduced hospital duration of stay and infectious complications compared to control groups.

Glutamine is known for its ability to enhance immune function and to decrease healing time in burn patients. Glutamine is the major amino acid lost during any tissue injury, implying that it has a significant role in the healing and recovery process.

Athletes who are interested in preserving muscle tissue and decreasing recovery time from training sessions can benefit from glutamine. Two thirds of the glutamine stores in the body reside within the muscle tissue. During times of stress and intense physical exertion the body releases high levels of the muscle wasting hormone cortisol, which can decrease glutamine stores. Supplementing glutamine can help keep the body in an anabolic state, making it easier to build and maintain muscle mass.It is necessary to supplement glutamine if you are interested in its healing and anabolic benefits. The wound healing properties of glutamine are only present in amounts 2 to 7 times greater than required in healthy persons.

Daily dosage recommendations

Ulcers - 2 grams
Anabolic purposes - 5-15 grams
Gastrointestinal diseases - 5-20 grams

Glutamine, which can be purchased online and at health-food stores, is far less expensive and much safer than most medications that it can be used as a substitute for.

Screening for prostate cancer: We can do better | savannahnow.com

Amid the many messages you will hear about screening for prostate cancer in the coming days, I hope these stand out most prominently: Science finds that there is at best a small potential benefit from prostate cancer screening and there are substantial known harms. We need a better test, and we need better treatment options. We can do better.

The panel that I chair, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, has just issued a recommendation against screening men of any age for prostate cancer using the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test.

The draft of this recommendation was posted for public comment in October.

Since then, we have read the many comments received, reviewed newly released evidence and arrived at this conclusion:

Many men are harmed as a result of prostate cancer screening and few, if any, benefit. The evidence shows that at most one man in 1,000 screened will avoid a prostate cancer death over the course of 10 years, and in the best and largest study done in the United States, no benefit was shown.

Of the same 1,000 men screened, two to three will have a serious complication of treatment such as a blood clot, heart attack or stroke or even death, and up to 40 will have erectile dysfunction, urinary incontinence or both. About 30 to 40 men in 1,000 will also have less serious but bothersome harms from a prostate biopsy, such as infection.

We need a better test, and we need better treatment options.

Cancer is a frightening word, but not all cancers are deadly. Prostate cancer is rarely aggressive enough to cause death within the course of a man?s natural lifespan. Three-quarters of men older than 80 and a third of men between ages 40 and 60 have cancer cells in their prostate, and yet men have only a 2.8 percent lifetime risk of dying from the disease.

Currently, there is no way to know which men have a cancer that may benefit from treatment.

Until we have a better test and better treatment options, the preventive services task force has recommended against screening for prostate cancer.

Whether or not to be screened for any condition is a decision each person must make with his or her clinician based on individual values and preferences, but we are urging all health care professionals to be forthcoming about the facts around prostate cancer risk, the relatively small benefit of detecting the cancer and the significant known harms of screening and treatment.

To be sure, there are gaps in the existing evidence on this topic.

One particular area of concern is that black men have a higher risk of developing prostate cancer and dying from it.

The same is true for those with a family history of the disease. There is no evidence to suggest, however, that these men have an increased benefit from current prostates cancer screening or that the balance of benefit and harms is any different for them. We need more research to improve the health of men at high risk for prostate cancer and to eliminate health disparities.

Some critics of our recommendation have suggested that we based our decision on an urge to cut costs for insurance companies and government programs such as Medicare.

Cost is not a consideration in our evaluation of the scientific evidence. Our mission is to improve the health of all Americans by sharing evidence-based recommendations with them and empowering them and the clinicians who serve them to make informed decisions.

The members of the task force are human; we face the same concerns and fears about health challenges that you do. This topic is not something we take lightly, and this decision was not reached in a cavalier fashion.

It is based on science and rooted in the knowledge that while we all want to help prevent deaths from prostate cancer, we need to recognize that current methods of PSA screening and treatment of screen detected cancer are not the answer.

We can do better.

Dr. Virginia A. Moyer is chair of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, an independent panel of experts in prevention that reviews and makes recommendations for clinical preventive health services.

(AP) ? Ryan Carter snapped a tie with 4:24 left, and the New Jersey Devils survived for a 5-3 victory over the New York Rangers after blowing a three-goal lead in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals on Wednesday night.

The Devils, who led 3-0 before the first period was half over, have a 3-2 edge in the series and can advance to face the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup finals with a win at home on Friday night. If the Rangers can stay alive then, Game 7 would be back in Madison Square Garden on Sunday.

The Devils seemed primed for an easy win when Stephen Gionta and Patrik Elias scored within the first 4:13 of the game. Travis Zajac made it 3-0 before the Rangers woke up and began chipping away.

Brandon Prust brought New York within 3-1 before the first period was over, and Ryan Callahan made it a one-goal game in the first minute of the second. The Garden really rocked when Marian Gaborik tied it at 3 just 17 seconds into the third with his first goal of the series.

But the comeback was all for naught. Carter put the Devils back in front, and Zach Parise sealed it with an empty-net goal in the closing seconds.

"I thought we probably played our best game of the series tonight," Rangers coach John Tortorella said.

Once Gaborik tied it with an unassisted goal that ricocheted in off the skate of goalie Martin Brodeur, it appeared the Rangers would ride the comeback all the way to one of the most stirring wins in team history ? one that would rival victories over New Jersey in the classic 1994 East finals.

Carter made sure it wouldn't happen.

Ilya Kovalchuk knocked Michael Del Zotto off the puck in the right corner, and Gionta sent a pass in front to Carter ? who had just charged in front from the bench ? for a quick shot that beat Henrik Lundqvist.

"You have to (keep it together) this time of year," Gionta said. "You have to have a short memory. Fortunately we did and came out with the victory."

New Jersey was outshot 28-17 overall and had only six shots in the third period, but two of them went in. Now the Devils are on the verge of their first Cup finals appearance since they won their third title in 2003.

Brodeur who has been the backbone of every Devils championship kept his focus throughout the third period when he was loudly taunted with chants of "Mar-ty, Mar-ty" after New York got even.

The Rangers were ultimately done in by another terrible start. For the 13th straight game in these playoffs, the team that scored first in New York's contests has gone on to win. The Rangers had been on a pattern of win-one, lose-one, but now they are on the verge of elimination with their second two-game losing streak in a series this year.

The only time the Rangers have won two straight in a playoff series is when they overcame a 3-2 hole in the first round and knocked out Ottawa.

The Rangers burned their timeout in the first period, and Devils coach Peter DeBoer spent his with 10:17 left in the game after his club was forced to ice the puck. Parise implored his teammates on the bench to, 'Come on boys.' and the messages from the coach and the captain did the trick.

New Jersey surely never thought it would be in this kind of fight after storming in front early.

Not only didn't the Rangers have the strong start they craved and insisted they needed, they were practically run out of their building less than 10 minutes in.

The same problems that plagued New York in its 4-1 loss in Game 4, when the Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, cropped up again in front of the home fans that grew frustrated and angry early.

Gionta got the Devils going 2:43 in when he gathered a rebound of Mark Fayne's shot right in front of Lundqvist, steadied himself without any pressure from the defense, and slipped in his third goal of the playoffs to start the barrage.

Elias made it 2-0 just 1:30 later on New Jersey's fourth shot of the night.

After Kovalchuk fumbled the puck just inside the blue line, he dived to keep it from leaving the Rangers' zone. The puck eventually came to Adam Henrique at the right point for a shot that was stopped by Lundqvist. Elias got it in front and scored his fourth.

Tortorella used his timeout then, but it made little difference. He appeared to be calm as he moved back and forth behind the bench while talking to his players. Whatever the message was didn't sink in.

New York generated a couple of scoring chances soon after that were either turned aside by Brodeur or thwarted by the Rangers themselves. Gaborik was set up in front after teammate Ruslan Fedotenko got the puck to him after a wraparound the Devils net, but the Rangers' struggling leading scorer fired a shot over the net from close range.

Fedotenko was in the middle of another chance moments later when he sent a shot in on Brodeur. The rebound came out to Derek Stepan, whose drive from in close was smothered by Brodeur.

The Devils shrugged those off and went back to padding their lead.

Just 5:26 after Elias' goal, Zajac made it 3-0 with his seventh of the playoffs. Bryce Salvador wiped out Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh in the offensive zone and started the play going the other way. Zajac got a clean shot from just inside the right circle that sailed past Lundqvist and beat him inside the left post at 9:49.

The tide began to turn the Rangers' way the rest of the period as they allowed only one shot the rest of the period and began cutting into the seemingly insurmountable deficit.

Prust, making his return following a one-game suspension for an elbow he delivered to the head of Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov in Game 3, showed off a bit of scoring touch when he converted on a breakaway with 4:19 left in the first.

Devils defenseman Marek Zidlicky turned over the puck in the neutral zone to Fedotenko, who fed a pass to the streaking Prust in the New Jersey end. Prust surged past the hardcharging Zidlicky and slid a backhander past Brodeur for his first goal of the playoffs.

The Rangers managed to outshoot the Devils 9-6 in the lopsided first period, but continued their sudden defensive dominance well into the second.

But not before they cut the Devils' lead down to a goal just 32 seconds into the second.

Brandon Dubinsky, back from a foot injury, fired a shot from the left point that was deflected in front and caromed toward the left corner. Artem Anisimov flung the puck back toward the crease and it struck the left skate of the driving Callahan and got past Brodeur. The goal stood up after a brief video review.

New Jersey didn't record its first shot of the period, and its second since its third goal, until Henrique put a puck in on Lundqvist 6:23 into the frame.

Lundqvist made just 12 saves en route to the loss and the Rangers allowed five goals for the first time all postseason.

To make the finals now, New York will have to win a third consecutive seven-game series. The Rangers have already played 19 postseason games.

Notes: Dubinsky had been sidelined since he was injured in the Rangers' victory over Ottawa in Game 7 of the first round. He sat out all seven games of the second round against Washington and the first four against New Jersey. John Mitchell was scratched to make room in the lineup. Prust's return forced D Steve Eminger to sit out after he played the two previous games. ... Kovalchuk now has 10 assists in the postseason.
