Don't dismiss the Nexus Q just yet ? it has potential

When Google announced the Nexus Q, an Android-powered "social streaming device," most people scoffed. It has a silly label ??what is social streaming anyway? ??and a startling $299 price tag. But don't write the ball-shaped?gadget off just yet,?because it has the guts and soul to roll its way into your home.

During the Google I/O conference in San Francisco, I?spent a lot of time chatting with folks about the Nexus Q. It's been referred to as everything from a "ball of awesomeness" ??by a Google employee's son?? to a "polished turd."

The price tag's what riled people up most, of course. Why spend $300 on the Nexus Q when you can buy an Apple TV for $99?

"Because it's got all the potential in the world," I theorized, while discussing the device with a former Apple developer. Don't get me wrong, I learned long ago that the true?potential of anything is rarely ever met, but Google's nudging the Nexus Q along in the right ways.

Right now you can only access media through Google Play (formerly the?Android Market) and YouTube on the Nexus Q, but that'll easily change in the future. Google's made sure that the Nexus Q is as?open as possible to developers (and even plans on setting up forums to encourage them). There could soon be all sorts of apps, hacks and tricks for the Android-powered device.

If software enhancements aren't sufficient, then you should keep in mind that the Nexus Q has a micro USB port which could be used for third-party accessories.

You see where I'm going with this? The Nexus Q offers 16GB of on-board storage, NFC support, can be expanded using the micro USB slot, is as open as the 24-hour diner down the street, and can double as a weapon. (This thing's surprisingly heavy.)

It might take a generation or two for the surface of the Nexus Q's potential to be truly scratched, but once it is, Apple TV and other similar devices are in trouble.

The Nexus Q can be pre-ordered now. It will start shipping in mid-July.

NEW YORK (AP) ? In pleading guilty to criminal charges, Peter Madoff portrayed himself as a victim of a domineering older brother who he revered right up until an evening in December 2008 when his sibling revealed that his wildly successful investment business was a sham that lost its customers their nearly $20 billion investment.

"I was in total shock," Madoff said Friday as he described the confession by his older brother, Bernard. "My world was destroyed. I lost everything I worked for."

The 66-year-old Madoff, saying he was "deeply ashamed and terribly sorry," spoke angrily about his 74-year-old brother, who is serving a 150-year prison term after admitting his creation of the largest known Ponzi scheme.

"My family was torn apart as a result of my brother's atrocious conduct," he said. "I was reviled by strangers as well as friends who assumed that I knew about the Ponzi scheme."

He said his brother had made it clear that he would never become a partner in the business where he had worked since 1966, even as he was showered with tens of millions of dollars in salary, bonuses and other financial gifts. He made him the investment business's chief compliance officer.

Peter Madoff said he was so confident about his brother's smarts and success that he persuaded his wife, daughter, granddaughter and sister to invest millions of dollars that they eventually lost in the fraud.

He agreed to serve 10 years in prison and surrender all his assets as he pleaded guilty to conspiracy and falsifying records. He will remain free on $5 million bail until his Oct. 4 sentencing. Federal prosecutors said the investigation was ongoing.

Prosecutors portrayed the younger Madoff as a criminally incompetent chief compliance officer who filed fabricated compliance reports for more than a decade and purposefully deceived the Securities and Exchange Commission.

"He even signed many weeks of compliance reports in one sitting, intentionally changing pens and ink colors to disguise the fact that he had done them at once," Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa A. Baroni told U.S. District Judge Laura Taylor Swain.

Madoff became choked up near the end of his statement after he described deciding with his brother which favored friends, clients and family members should receive the $300 million that remained in the investment company's accounts. The checks never went out.

Only weeks before, the clients had been told their investment had grown to more than $65 billion.

The plea was consistent with Bernard Madoff's own claims that his brother and two sons were in the dark about his misdeeds.

FBI Assistant Director Janice K. Fedarcyk said Peter Madoff played an "essential enabling role" in the scam by certifying fabricated investment results.

"Peter Madoff enabled the largest fraud in human history. He will now be jailed well into old age, and he will forfeit virtually every penny he has," U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said. "We are not yet finished calling to account everyone responsible for the epic fraud of Bernard Madoff and the epic pain of his many victims."

Peter Madoff was credited with creating a computer trading system for the firm in the late 1970s and early 1980s that was considered groundbreaking at the time.

"I loved my job," he said.

A complaint filed in bankruptcy court alleged that the Madoff investment business had transferred more than $77 million to Peter Madoff.

Peter Madoff admitted Friday that he tried to hide millions of dollars from the Internal Revenue Service.

Baroni said he had engaged in "an enormous tax fraud conspiracy," enabling tens of millions of dollars to be transferred among members of the Madoff family to dodge millions of dollars in taxes, and he arranged for his wife to take a no-show job at the investment firm.

As part of a forfeiture agreement, Madoff's wife, Marion, and daughter, Shana, must forfeit nearly all of their assets. The government said those assets and assets that will be forfeited by other family members include several homes, a Ferrari and more than $10 million in cash and securities. It said his wife will be left with $771,733.

Though Madoff had been the firm's chief compliance officer for nearly four decades, the government marked his start in the conspiracy as 1996. It said he created false and misleading compliance documents and false reports for the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The lies worsened in severity after August 2006, when the business was registered with the SEC as an investment adviser, requiring annual filings to guide the SEC's examination programs. Prosecutors said Madoff made "numerous false statements" to create the false appearance that the business represented a small number of highly sophisticated clients.

Baroni said the Madoffs once claimed the investment firm had 23 client accounts when it actually had more than 4,000.

His plea differed from his brother's appearance three years ago, when numerous investors spoke of their pain after losing their life savings.

On two occasions Friday, the judge asked if any investors wished to speak. None stepped forward.

Since the fraud was revealed, a court-appointed trustee has reached agreements to recover approximately $9.1 billion and has distributed more than $1.1 billion to Madoff's victims.

Rice University researchers create spray-on battery, powered bathroom tiles

Liquid solar cells are pretty neat, to be sure, but current-generating paint can be a hard color to match. Good thing, then, that researchers at Rice university have developed the perfect complement: a spray-on battery. By carefully layering five coats of specially formulated paint, the team has found a way to apply a thin coat of lithium ion storage to multiple surfaces, including glass, ceramics, steel and flexible polymers. Early experiments are promising -- after applying the process to nine ordinary bathroom tiles, the painted batteries were able to power a small array of LEDs (spelling "Rice") for six hours, consistently pumping out 2.4 volts of electricity. After 60 charge / discharge cycles, researches say the batteries retained most of their capacity. Neelam Singh, Rice graduate student and lead author of the team's report, says the technology will only improve when coupled with modern methods. "Spray painting is already an industrial process, so it will be very easy to incorporate this into industry," she said. "We really do consider this a paradigm changer." Members of the FBI and Secret Service were at Jackson State Community College on Tuesday to officially certify one of the college?s computer degrees as government approved.

Jackson State is now one of only 24 out of the more than 1,200 community colleges throughout the U.S. that has received a certification as a National Centers of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance 2-Year Education. The certification was issued jointly by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.

The certification means the two-year college has met the criteria of establishing core classes, cooperating with other colleges and universities to share information, and creating a security network for its own information technology systems as established by the two government agencies. The certification is held by 166 campuses and institutions throughout the U.S. Only three other Tennessee colleges have received the certification: University of Memphis; UT Chattanooga and Fountainhead College of Technology, said Dr. Tom Pigg, who wrote the proposal for certification.

?This certification is important to us as a college,? he said, ?but it is more important to our mission of teaching those people who are going to protect our (IT) systems.?

Classes to obtain the assurance certificate include core computer classes, such as programming and design, database systems and Linux. But students in the certificate program also will study digital forensics, secure electronic commerce and enterprise security management. The two-year program is designed to train people how to secure all types of Internet and database systems, not just those used by the federal government, said Jackson State President Bruce Blanding.

?We know there are people who want to attack our military and federal government,? he said, ?but it does no less harm if they attack our companies and state governments.?

The need for trained people who can prevent or track cyber attacks has become essential as hospitals, corporations, small businesses, airlines and people become more dependent on the Internet, cell phones, Wi-Fi, and other technology for communication, scheduling, product design, medical treatments and other information, said Richard Harlow, special agent in charge of the Memphis Field Office of the United States Secret Service.

?For every crime there is computer evidence,? he said. ?So it is becoming more and more important.?

People who pass the assurance program and subsequent certification exams usually earn a starting salary of $38,990 to $48,840, according to documents from Jackson State.

Jackson State charges $164 per credit hour for classes. That includes parking and all computer class fees. That means an incoming freshman, who must take all 60 credit hours of coursework, would pay $9,840 without the help of any grants. That cost could be lower for those who do not have to take some core college requirements, such as composition I or general biology, for example.

Jackson State began working toward acquiring the government?s Information Assurance 2-year Education certificate in 2006. FBI Special Agent Steve Champine said teaching people how to secure computer networks and track infiltrators into those networks is essential because the Internet now allows the nation?s enemies to gather information and cause interruptions from anywhere.

?It used to be that spies had to leave their country and come to our shores to commit crimes,? he said. ?That is no longer necessary.?

Mexico is facing a milestone for women as it fields its first female candidate from a major party in the July 1 presidential election. But women are vying to make an impact in local elections as well.

Mexico may be fielding its first female candidate from a major party for president, a milestone for women in politics here, but there is just as much buzz for female candidates at the local level.

In the conservative city of Guadalajara, one candidate even opted to go topless to get?attention for her bid to congress.?Even though she's been criticized for objectifying women, she sees it differently. ?We had to do something that would have an impact,? says Natalia Ju?rez of the leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), as campaigning wrapped up before Sunday's race. Mexicans will vote this weekend for a new president, governors in a handful of states, and a whole new congress.

Ms. Ju?rez raised eyebrows recently when she disseminated provocative photos during her campaign. The first, a billboard image of the candidate and six other women nude from the waist up, their left hands covering breasts, brought widespread attention. Similarly controversial images followed.

For some women it showed she would be an honest politician, with nothing to hide. But not all of the reaction was positive. Critics from around the world accused her of objectifying women for political gain. But Ju?rez, a philosophy professor at the University of Guadalajara, shrugs off criticism. Her intention was to fight prejudices and ?help demystify the feminine body,? she says.

She acknowledges that disrobing as a campaign tactic is a radical notion for some, but it?s not the only unconventional proposition Ju?rez advocates. She also supports the legalization of drugs, particularly marijuana, as a way to combat the country?s spiraling drug violence. And she believes it?s time the country focused more attention on the rights of women and gays.

On Wednesday, the last day of campaigning in Mexico, Ju?rez shook hands with dozens of vendors at a bustling market in the heart of the city. But she spoke little of the more controversial aspects of her campaign. Instead, she distributed yellow backpacks with her party?s logo and took shots at the more powerful political parties, promising to work for progress in her diverse district.

?It?s time for change,? she told Sandra Flores Mendoza, who was selling a variety of fresh produce at the market.

Ms. Flores, who clutched a campaign leaflet of Ju?rez?s nude photo in her hands, says she plans to vote for the professor.

?Her photo says a lot about her,? says the vendor. ?It says she is bold and uninhibited; that can serve her well in Congress. I think she?s a strong candidate who has nothing to hide.?

After chatting with Ju?rez nearby, vendor Pedro Mejia Rodriguez says he likes what he hears. But he views her use of nudity to try to win votes as immoral.

?People's actions, their work, should speak for themselves," he says. "Is the next step to get naked in Congress??

Not a chance, Ju?rez says.

The upheaval is threatening to marginalize Microsoft Corp., the world's largest software maker, and ultimately diminish the amount of money coming in from sales of its Windows operating system and a wide range of applications designed primarily for personal computers.

As part of its effort to remain relevant, Microsoft paid $8.5 billion last year for Internet video chat service Skype in the largest acquisition in its history.

In another bold move, Microsoft last week unveiled its own tablet computer, Surface, to compete with Apple Inc.'s iPad. Microsoft has designed Surface to run on the upcoming Windows 8, the biggest change to the company's operating system in nearly two decades.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is counting on Yammer's sharing tools to ensure that long-established Microsoft applications, including its word processing and spreadsheet programs, remain vital components for getting work done. Google Inc. has emerged as a threat with a toolbox of similar programs that run primarily over the Internet rather than on individual machines.

"Think of Yammer as a fundamental part of our Office family," Ballmer said on a Monday conference call.

Microsoft will have much of the same autonomy given to Skype since that deal closed eight months ago. Yammer will continue to be run from its San Francisco headquarters by its co-founder and CEO, David Sacks. It will also continue to provide its services separately from Microsoft's offerings.

Microsoft did not give a time frame for when the deal should close.

Gartner Inc. analyst Larry Cannell said Microsoft's latest acquisition was smart and reflected "a recognition that the social capabilities in Microsoft's products have been deficient."

Investors couldn't muster much enthusiasm for the deal on another somber day for the stock market. Microsoft's stock fell 82 cents, or nearly 3 percent, to close at $29.88.

Although other companies such as Jive Software Inc. and Salesforce.com Inc. are building social networks for businesses, Yammer shares the most DNA with Facebook Inc.

When it started in 2008, Yammer raised its initial funding from Peter Thiel ? Facebook's first major investor. Thiel formerly worked with Sacks while they were both executives at PayPal, an online payment service that eBay Inc. bought for $1.5 billion in 2002.

Sean Parker, the former Facebook president depicted by Justin Timberlake in the 2010 movie "The Social Network," also sits on Yammer's board of directors. Parker still owns a 4.6 percent stake in Facebook currently worth about $2.2 billion.

Microsoft has its own financial ties to Facebook, having invested $240 million in the social network in 2007. After selling $250 million in stock in Facebook's initial public offering last month, Microsoft still retains a 1.7 percent stake worth about $840 million.

Yammer has relied largely on word of mouth to attract more than 5 million registered users at more than 200,000 companies worldwide.

The service depends on employees to use its free tools to set up a private network within their company. Once the network is getting wide usage, Yammer then tries to sell more sophisticated features to the companies.

As a privately held company, Yammer hasn't disclosed its revenue. In a Monday note about the Microsoft deal, Nomura Securites analyst Rick Sherlund estimated Yammer's revenue at $15 million to $20 million last year.

The company has been expanding so rapidly that it had been considered a prime candidate to pursue an IPO by next year.

The stock of Yammer rival Jive Software has gained 65 percent since it went public six months ago, though it fell 74 cents Monday to close at $19.75.

The IPO market has gone into a deep freeze since Facebook flopped in its closely watching stock market debut last month. Instead of soaring as had been widely anticipated, Facebook shares plummeted during the first few weeks of trading. Although the stock has rallied recently, it remains 16 percent below the IPO price of $38, which had minted Facebook Inc. with a market value of $104 billion. Facebook shares dropped 99 cents, or 3 percent, Monday to close at $32.06.

Sacks said the frosty conditions in the IPO market didn't influence Yammer's decision to sell to Microsoft. The negotiations between the two companies began before Facebook's IPO, according to Saks and Ballmer.

"Our thinking was based on the fit with Microsoft and the fact that we think Microsoft is a great partner for us in expanding the service and taking it to the next level," Sacks said.

The sale will provide a hefty return for Yammer's early backers. The startup has raised about $142 million in venture capital.

A pioneering report of genome-wide gene expression in autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) finds genetic changes that help explain why one person has an ASD and another does not. The study, published by Cell Press on June 21 in The American Journal of Human Genetics, pinpoints ASD risk factors by comparing changes in gene expression with DNA mutation data in the same individuals. This innovative approach is likely to pave the way for future personalized medicine, not just for ASD but also for any disease with a genetic component.

ASDs are a heterogeneous group of developmental conditions characterized by social deficits, difficulty communicating, and repetitive behaviors. ASDs are thought to be highly heritable, meaning that they run in families. However, the genetics of autism are complex.

Researchers have found rare changes in the number of copies of defined genetic regions that associate with ASD. Although there are some hot-spot regions containing these alterations, very few genetic changes are exactly alike. Similarly, no two autistic people share the exact same symptoms. To discover how these genetic changes might affect gene transcription and, thus, the presentation of the disorder, Rui Luo, a graduate student in the Geschwind lab at UCLA, studied 244 families in which one child (the proband) was affected with an ASD and one was not.

In addition to identifying several potential new regions where copy-number variants (CNVs) are associated with ASDs, Geschwind's team found genes within these regions to be significantly misregulated in ASD children compared with their unaffected siblings. "Strikingly, we observed a higher incidence of haploinsufficient genes in the rare CNVs in probands than in those of siblings, strongly indicating a functional impact of these CNVs on expression," says Geschwind. Haploinsuffiency occurs when only one copy of a gene is functional; the result is that the body cannot produce a normal amount of protein. The researchers also found a significant enrichment of misexpressed genes in neural-related pathways in ASD children. Previous research has found that these pathways include other genetic variants associated with autism, which Geschwind explains further legitimizes the present findings.
