Mompiphany #35: Pregnancy Scare | Mompiphany

I recently had a pregnancy scare. It sounds almost comical to write that. I am 36 and have been married for 10 years. My husband and I own a nice-sized home, we have a mini- van (clearly the vehicle of choice for Moms who have realized after their third time pooping on the delivery table that there really is no more practical car for a large family), we have a Costco membership and are able to provide healthy meals and snacks for our family. We have enough love, medical insurance, and patience to care for our family no matter what size it is. Yet, when I thought that I could be pregnant I was scared. Like, broke out in a cold sweat, saw my care-free days filled with 3 kids in school pass right before my eyes. I totally empathize with all of the girls on 16 and pregnant (although they look like they took the news of their pregnancies a lot better than I did.)

I took a pregnancy test and before I even checked the results some FIVE days later, I knew what the result would be: POSITIVE. I am positively pregnant with our fourth child. I, of course, had publicly declared to anyone who would listen that we were done having kids. I even gave away all of my maternity and baby related things (oh.. and to all of my friends to whom I have given my things, I will be needing EVERYTHING back. Thanks in advance!). I swore that the only way to justify having more than three kids was to live on a farm, which we don?t.

My husband took the news of our expanding family much better than I did. ?Oh this is great. It will be great. Big families are great.? Of course, I know that it will be great? eventually when the baby is sleeping through the night but I worry. I worry if I have enough to give a 4th child. I wonder if my breasts can even produce milk anymore given the fact that they are virtually nonexistent after nursing three kids. I worry that my husband and I will be prisoners in our own home once the children realize that there are strength in numbers. I worry that I will have to go to jail for cutting someone who snidely says ?WOW? or ?God bless you!!!? and looks at us like zoo animals as we get out of our clown car.

But even with all of that worry, one thing is not changing: I am 3.5 months pregnant (and by the way? when you are having your 4th child, you automatically look like you are in your last trimester almost immediately after having relations) and at the beginning of next year we will be blessed with another child.? We will be a family of six. YOWZER!! It should make for a very interesting ride with lots of Mompiphanies. Hopefully, I will have enough time and wherewithal to write about them!

Let's Get Reacquainted, Mr. Boomer ? Boomer Immersion

By Gina Pagliaro

Our team collaborated with AdAge last month to discuss methods for understanding the male baby boomer (Dudes to Dads: U.S. Men?s Attitudes Toward Life, Family, Work, available for $249.00 from Ad Age Insights). And, although we approach mature markets from a behavioral perspective ? monitoring the seasons of human life ? we had to face a realization. Boomer males fly under the marketing research radar unlike the well-explored and developed persona of the female boomer. Newsflash, our male protagonist no longer maintains the outlook of the heavy-handed, breadwinner from the 1950s.

Who is the boomer male today?

Who is the boomer male today? Pictured: Jon Hamm as Don Draper in AMC?s Mad Men. (Image ? American Movie Classics Company LLC)

This clearly isn?t a novel statement. We all know that women and men are taking on different societal roles. But as marketers, are we really considering these evolving characteristics, due to the changing zeitgeist, in our communications efforts?

Zeitgeist, ?the spirit of age,? is the intellectual and cultural feel of an era. Experiences of people within a culture define the zeitgeist, which in turn shapes a particular worldview of the entire culture. As an industry, much of our cultural research is around women. During the ?Mad Men? boom of advertising, women were targets for household/family related purchases. But as their business roles grew so did our attention. Focus is (and has been) on these super-human females. Ok, so I?m biased as a professional female, but what about the progress of the evolving male? Just as we reevaluated the female in our changing world, we need to do the same for male cultural influences.

Baby Boomer Men and Senior Caregiving

We?re now seeing boomer men more engaged and hands-on with family matters than ever before. Male caregiving for adults has more than doubled, from 19 to 40 percent in the last 15 years according to the Alzheimer?s Association. We attribute this drastic shift to the decreasing size of the average family, the greater geographic divide of family members, and higher life expectancies. If we continue to focus on the female audience, we?re sure to overlook the male problem-solver and dual-purchaser.

Expanding Male Household Roles and Responsibilities

Boomer men are not only caregiving for their parents and wives, but also for their children. This change in household duties also resulted from the ?mancession.? Beginning in 2007, unemployment rates began to disproportionately hurt men over women. Let?s consider the effects of our economy; white-collared males with a higher salary were quickly replaced with workers who accepted lower pay, like our youth and the realistic working female. It made financial sense for fathers to stay home or share housing responsibilities with their wives.

Male Boomer Lifestyle Trends: Vibrant Healthy Living

And like their female counterpart, boomer males also focus on caring for themselves. It?s, ?how can I live better,? and services that empathize with their desire to be active, vibrant and connected that give validation to their needs without calling out the silvers and grays. Trends for keeping youthful, such as hormone replacement therapy, are popular among both females and males. Despite its unconventionality, anti-aging male services tripled in recent years, resulting in $400 million industry.

Consider taking an androgynous approach, meeting the developmental needs of the male boomer, while continuing outreach to the female boomer, to maximize your audience. Traditional roles are going out the window and boomer characteristics will overlap more frequently as our culture evolves.

When in doubt, look to the zeitgeist.

    Climate concerns

    Friday, July 27, 2012

For decades, scientists have known that the effects of global climate change could have a potentially devastating impact across the globe, but Harvard researchers say there is now evidence that it may also have a dramatic impact on public health.

As reported in a paper published in the July 27 issue of Science, a team of researchers led by James G. Anderson, the Philip S. Weld Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry, are warning that a newly-discovered connection between climate change and depletion of the ozone layer over the U.S. could allow more damaging ultraviolet (UV) radiation to reach the Earth's surface, leading to increased incidence of skin cancer.

In the system described by Anderson and his team, water vapor injected into the stratosphere by powerful thunderstorms converts stable forms of chlorine and bromine into free radicals capable of transforming ozone molecules into oxygen. Recent studies have suggested that the number and intensity of such storms are linked to climate changes, Anderson said, which could in turn lead to increased ozone loss and greater levels of harmful UV radiation reaching the Earth's surface, and potentially higher rates of skin cancer.

"If you were to ask me where this fits into the spectrum of things I worry about, right now it's at the top of the list," Anderson said. "What this research does is connect, for the first time, climate change with ozone depletion, and ozone loss is directly tied to increases in skin cancer incidence, because more ultraviolet radiation is penetrating the atmosphere."

Unfortunately, Anderson said, we don't know how this process will evolve over time.

"We don't know what the development of this has been ? we don't have measurements of this deep convective injection of water into the stratosphere that go back in time," Anderson said.

"But the best guide for the evolution of this is to look at the research that connects climate change with severe storm intensity and frequency, and it's clear that there is a developing scientific case that the addition of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere is increasing climate change, and in turn driving severe storm intensity and frequency."

While it's impossible to know how many skin cancer cases may be related to ozone depletion over the U.S., the link between ozone loss and increased incidence of the disease has been extensively studied, Anderson said.

"There has been a major effort by the medical community to define the relationship between decreases in ozone and the subsequent increases in skin cancer," he said. "The answer is quite clear ? if you multiply the fractional decrease in ozone protection by about three, you get the increase in skin cancer incidence. There are 1 million new skin cancer cases in the U.S. annually ? it's the most common form of cancer, and it's one that's increasing in spite of all the medical research devoted to it."

But it isn't only humans who have to worry about the effects of increased UV radiation.

Many crops, particularly staple crops grown for human consumption ? such as wheat, soybeans and corn ? could suffer damage to their DNA, Anderson said.

Ironically, Anderson said, the discovery that climate change might be driving ozone loss happened virtually by accident.

Though they had worked since the mid-1980s to investigate ozone depletion in the Arctic and Antarctic, by the early-2000s, Anderson's team had turned their attention to climate studies. In particular, they were working to understand how the convective clouds ? updrafts that cause storms to build high into the sky ? contribute to the creation of cirrus clouds.

"It was in the process of looking at that mechanism that we came to this unexpected observation ? that the convective clouds in these storm systems over the U.S. are reaching far deeper into the stratosphere that we ever expected," Anderson said.

While earlier tests performed in the Arctic had demonstrated that water vapor was a key component in creating the "free-radical" compounds that break down ozone, Anderson said the latest finding is much more troubling, because it suggests the process can happen at much higher temperatures than initially suspected.

"The bottom line is that if you increase the water vapor concentration, you actually increase the threshold temperature for executing this chemical conversion ? from the stable forms of chlorine to the free radical form," Anderson said. "If the amount of water vapor and the temperature over the U.S. satisfies the conditions for rapid conversion of inorganic chlorine to this free-radical form, we've got a real problem, because the chemistry is identical to what we previously demonstrated is taking place over the Arctic."

Also surprising, he added, was the realization that, to throw water vapor high into the atmosphere, storms needn't be unusually large.

"We have hundreds of measurements world-wide addressing the photochemical structure controlling ozone, but only a limited number of flights over the U.S. in summer," he said. "The flights were studying average storms over the middle-west, and of the 20 observations we made over the U.S., about half demonstrated significant penetration into the stratosphere," he said.

The next step in the research, Anderson said, is to conduct a series of tests to confirm whether the free-radical form of chlorine and bromine are present in the stratosphere at significantly elevated levels in the presence of convectively-injected water vapor.

"In my mind, this is not just a broad public health issue," Anderson said. "This is about actually being able to step out into the sunlight ? it's about your children and your children's health. Of course, we don't know how rapidly the frequency and intensity of these storms will increase, so we can't place a time scale on this problem, but the core issue here is quite straightforward and simple, because we understand this chemistry."

Children's Health & Fitness ? Obesity Is A Health Hazard!

    From Wall Africa?..

Being obese or overweight might be seen as something that is acceptable but have you ever wondered just how much it affects the young body?

Dietician Karlien Gous says the World Health Organisation (WHO) defines obesity as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to ones health.

Obesity has different classifications, this is how the medical profession will determine not only if a person is obese/ overweight but also the level of obesity.

?The main reason one develops obesity and overweight is an energy imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended. It has been shown that globally there are an increased intake of energy-dense foods that are high in fat, salt and sugars but low in vitamins, minerals and other micronutrients,? she says.

Ones chances of being obese have been increased by a decrease in the amount of physical exercise due to many forms of work and changing modes of transportation amongst other things.

Changes in dietary and physical activity patterns are often the result of environmental and societal changes.

Gous further notes that as more and more fast food options are becoming available in urban as well as rural areas, there is an increase in obesity among younger children.

?Overweight and obesity are major risk factors for a number of chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

With the increase of overweight younger people, we see in the medical field an increase of these chronic diseases at a younger age.

Home Buying Tips From Real Estate Experts | Realty Services Plus

It can be quite daunting to buy real estate, particularly for first time buyers. It should calm your nerves somewhat to realize just how lucrative wisely planned and executed real estate investments can be. This article has some information to help you get started buying real estate whether you are a first-time buyer, or a veteran.

When you are negotiating the price of real estate, it is best to have a moderate approach. It can be counter productive to be too aggressive in your bargain hunting. It?s best to tell your real estate agent what you want, and let them handle the negotiations themselves. They have experience.

Real estate agents should contact those who they have helped buy or sell a home once each year. If you call them again, they will know how much help you were when they were buying their home. Kindly remind them that you make your income via referrals and that you would feel honored if they spread your name to friends.

You?ve finally decided to buy a house, but now you have to find a reputable real estate agent. You?ll want to find an agent you can trust. For an area you?re unfamiliar with, check with the Better Business Bureau for any complaints against agents and how they were resolved. Look around until you find an agent that truly seems to be looking out for your best interests.

Before you buy a house, hire a home inspector. If the house you?re looking at requires serious renovation work, you need to know it before buying it. This makes the inspector an extremely cost-effective and-safety conscious choice that should never be bypassed.

Do some research and analysis on the area housing market. Use various websites to check for foreclosed homes, sales prices and time on market for houses in your local area. Other things you may want to investigate are local unemployment rates, income levels and schools. In some cases, having the perfect location can override other factors.

Build a large network of fellow real estate investors. There will be a steady supply of properties that are available, but each investor will have a preference for particular types of property. This can lead you to the perfect place that you might not have found otherwise.

When purchasing a home, try to limit the existence of fireplaces to one, to avoid having to maintain too many of them. Multiple fireplaces don?t get used as a general rule, and they are a nuisance to keep clean.

Buying and investing in real estate is a huge purchasing decision that will have a dramatic impact on your life. The advice in this piece can help you steer clear of common real estate traps, and make the best decision

US House passes Fed audit bill; measure seen dying in Senate

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Legislation to subject the Federal Reserve's monetary policy to audits sailed through the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday although the measure is expected to die in the Democrat-controlled Senate.

The legislation, written by Republican representative Ron Paul, whose anti-Fed crusade prompted a presidential bid and his grass-roots folk-hero status, passed the House by a 327-98 vote on Wednesday, exceeding the two-thirds majority needed.

Eighty-nine Democrats joined 238 Republicans to approve it.

Fed officials have long fought the audit bill, arguing it would compromise their independence. Chairman Ben Bernanke told House lawmakers last week it would open the door to a "nightmare scenario" of political meddling in monetary policy decisions.

The vote showed bipartisan support in the House for greater scrutiny of the U.S. central bank's powers which, were expanded to help it tackle the financial crisis.

"I don't know how anybody could be against transparency," Paul said during a debate on the floor on Tuesday, adding that Americans deserved more details of the Fed's bank rescue deals and support to foreign central banks.

"They're sick and tired of what happened in the bailout and where the wealthy got bailed out and the poor lost their jobs and they lost their homes," said Paul, who retires at year-end.

"It's time that we stood up to the Federal Reserve that right now acts like some kind of high, exalted priesthood, unaccountable to democracy," added Dennis Kucinich, a Democrat who is losing his seat due to a primary defeat.

Many Republicans and some Democrats have criticized the Fed's extraordinary measures to rescue banks and buy mortgage and Treasury debt, saying the central bank strayed into Congress' fiscal policy territory.

They say the Fed's actions to ease the 2007-2009 recession may have planted the seeds of high inflation in the future.

The Fed asset purchases, aimed at lowering borrowing costs and spurring economic growth, have swollen its balance sheet to $2.8 trillion from around $800 billion before the crisis. It has held interest rates at nearly zero for three and a half years and has pledged to keep them extraordinary low until late 2014.

Paul's bill directs the Government Accountability Office, an independent, nonpartisan congressional agency, to conduct a full Fed review. It would remove an exemption that shielded from audit the monetary policy and other decisions by the Federal Open Market Committee.

    NO VOTE IN SENATE

Paul's son, Republican Senator Rand Paul, has introduced a companion bill, but the Democrats who control the Senate do not intend to bring it to a vote, a senior Democratic aide said.

But the aide said Rand Paul was expected to try to force a vote on it as an amendment to other legislation.

Some Democrats, generally less critical of the Fed, say such audits would undermine the Fed's independence and erode market confidence in the central bank.

"That will politicize the making of such policy, and I think it's a bad way to go," said Steny Hoyer, the number-two Democrat in the House.

    SECOND CHANCE IN 2013?

Should Republicans win control of the Senate in November's elections, the Paul audit measure will likely resurface in some form next year. Rand Paul will continue in the Senate and will succeed his father as Congress' top Fed critic.

His efforts to rein in the Fed's powers also could shift next year to a campaign to replace Bernanke, whose four-year term expires January 31, 2014.

Ron Paul also may try to influence future Republican policy toward the Fed by insisting that portions of the bill be incorporated into the Republican economic platform at the party's convention in Tampa in August.

"Paul has 158 delegates and it is not inconceivable that some 'audit the Fed' language is prevalent in the Republican platform when all is said and done," said Chris Krueger, senior policy analyst at Guggenheim Partners in Washington.

(AP) ? The university once attended by a man accused of killing 12 people in a Colorado movie theater confirmed on Wednesday that it received a suspicious package two days earlier that was turned over to authorities, but it wouldn't confirm its contents or sender.

The University of Colorado, Denver said the U.S. Postal Service delivered the package to its medical campus Monday, and it was immediately investigated and turned over to authorities within hours.

Fox News' website reported that former neuroscience graduate student James Holmes sent a notebook to the university containing scribblings of stick figures being shot and a written description of an upcoming attack. The package containing it was addressed to a psychiatrist at the school, the website reported. It was unclear if Holmes, 24, had had any previous contact with the person. The neuroscience program that he withdrew from on June 10 included professors of psychiatry.

He is accused of opening fire on a theater showing the new Batman movie, killing 12 people and injuring 58.

NBC News, citing unnamed sources, reported that Holmes told investigators to look for the package and that it described killing people.

The FBI and other law enforcement agencies refused to confirm the reports to The Associated Press.

U.S. Postal Service spokesman David Rupert said the agency's inspectors have no direct knowledge of the package reportedly containing the notebook. He said no one has contacted the Postal Service for assistance in the investigation.

Citing unnamed law enforcement sources, Fox News' website reported that Holmes sent the notebook in a package that had sat unopened since July 12.

The university said the report that the package sat uninvestigated that long is inaccurate. A spokeswoman declined to comment further, citing a gag order issued by a judge in the case.

Before the gag order was issued, police said Holmes received more than 50 packages at the school and his home that apparently contained ammunition, combat gear and explosive materials that he used in the attack and to booby-trap his Aurora apartment. Holmes' apartment building remained closed on Wednesday, although his defense team stopped by for a brief visit. They left without answering reporters' questions.

Holmes was allegedly stockpiling for the attack while he studied at the school's neuroscience program. He bought a shotgun and pistol in May, authorities say. On June 7, the date he took a year-end oral exam, he bought an assault rifle. He filed paperwork to leave the program three days later and did not provide a reason, the university has said.

On June 25, he filed an application to join a private gun range in eastern Colorado, but the club's owner, hearing what he described as a "bizarre" outgoing voice mail on Holmes' cellphone recorded in a low voice with heavy-breathing, told his staff to watch out for the man. Holmes never came to the range.

    Holmes grew up in California.

basement odors There are a lot involving complications in your own life, you really want to reduce, nonetheless at times you're very impossible by doing this. One of them is in line generally there in the basements of your abode which is Shape. Without doubt, shape dangers will be countless. To start with, we should get a new glimpse of precisely what shape is definitely. Shape is really a black/green compound that you mostly notice in the spots that happen to be soaked and also monsoon, as if your basements, lavatory and also around air-conditioning depositories and also where ever there's a water loss, or perhaps a place and that is exposed to water. Simply, shapes will be incredibly tiny creatures 'fungi' active just about everywhere. Shapes will need natural and organic elements such as simply leaves, solid wood and also newspaper like a food source so as to retain the daily life and for replica. So, should your basements includes a warm/mild environment and also moisture content over 50%, you do have a pleased shape community succeeding over there. basement odors There are many type of shapes that happen to be recognized by us; Mucor, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Fusarium, Penicillium, Trichodema, Rhizopus and also Acremonium to mention a few. Shape increases around type of crusty and also tufted cellular levels. It features a damp odour in addition. Other than having a annoying appears to be like and ugly odor, your shape dangers are very something you can't afford to disregard. It is causes harm to are simply just unrestricted. basement odors Shape is in charge of various unclear health and fitness penalties by various illnesses. This leads to a range of allergies to the people exposed to this. Some of them will be the obstruction involving nostril and also discomfort and also urge around mouth area, neck, skin color, view in addition. Whomever sensitive to help shape is affected with continual sneezing, foods allergies, tremors and also level of responsiveness to help scents. Lymph nodes receive enlarged at times and the affected individual is affected with difficulties around swallowing. Other than possessing these kind of allergic reactions a few a lot of other issues in addition. As soon as shape is definitely exposed to people at home, this minimizes its defense mechanisms in addition. You'll find multitudinous side effects of this fungus on the individual defense mechanisms; ab suffering, physique pain and also muscle mass sprains, getting rid of notion around throat and mouth, frosty and also coughing, nausea, typical attacks, diarrhea, very poor desire for foods, natural some weakness, acne and also hair fall to mention a few. Even so one can possibly triumph over this matter through taking a few ways. For attic, basements and also wall structure shape eradication ensure that you have the mandatory gear and that is needed in the procedure. Turn you into entirely insured. Employ a hygienic anti-bacterial soap and bathe the location which has a remember to brush and also cloth completely till the traces will be abstracted, from then on rub the location which has a soaked cloth and then which has a dried out cloth and then readily anti-septic across the place. Eventually, be sure and eliminate your shape meticulously. Look across the place, and check out anyone to get indoors air quality evaluating and also treatment method to prevent foreseeable future mold and mildew expansion, time to time.

United Way cuts funds to area agencies | Williamson County ...

AUSTIN (KXAN) ? Nonprofit organizations in Austin rely heavily on United Way. But now some of those nonprofits are looking for ways to survive after United Way for Greater Austin announced more than a million dollars in cuts.

The news came late last week that nearly two dozen nonprofit agencies will each lose thousands of dollars.

United Way officials said they had no choice but to cut $1.2 million ? money that went to help everything from education and health care to the elderly.

For nonprofit agencies in Austin the search for funds is a priority. Angela Atwood with Family Eldercare was one of 22 agencies hit by a big surprise after United Way decided to cut its donations.

Family Eldercare, which provides services and in-home care for Austin?s rapidly rising senior citizen population, lost $64,000 in funds.

?Our contract with United Way was to begin July 1 and we were notified end of business [day on] July 19,? said Angela Atwood, CEO of Family Eldercare.

It?s money the agency had already spent providing fans for the elderly, who in this Texas heat, are without air conditioning.

?The electric [bill] has gone up so high you can?t afford the a[ir] c[onditioning],? said Rose Naylor, Family Eldercare client.

It is a decision that has affected all kinds of nonprofit organizations.

Capital Idea, an agency that works to stop poverty, lost all $100,000 in funding. So did Meals on Wheels And More , which lost $76,500. Austin Groups for the Elderly lost $72,500. Others like LifeWorks received a reduction, losing $140,000.

United Way says it was forced to make tough decisions.

?Donations to the United Way went down, and so with the campaign down we had to make some decisions that we could no longer sustain funding out of our Rainy Day Fund,? said Lauren Payver, spokeswoman for United Way for Greater Austin.

That fund had already been tapped into covering $3 million in costs. They have also tried other measures like layoffs and pay cuts, but it still was not enough.

?It was a really tough decision, but we

Dr. Faragher Answers Your Questions About the Future of Navigation Technology

    Automation?
    by eldavojohn
How much of this can be done automatically and how much of this must be hand guided? For example you talked about [slashdot.org] fingerprints changing over time and being used only as a guide. Is there a measurement or confidence variable that you can employ to automate when the fingerprint is still valid or has morphed too much? Or is that something that a human overlord must monitor and do research to notice that a new apartment building has just been opened and there are now hundreds of new signals? It feels like you are using an open domain that could have outliers and irregularities that require a human to clean the data before it can be trusted to give you low false positives and true negatives. What statistical methods do you use to overcome these sort of real world problems so that your system can be put anywhere and work?

Dr. Faragher: In the outdoor environment, timing measurements are used. In the indoor environment however RSSI is the primary measurement metric. The inside positioning system exploits low cost inertial measurements to provide the initial push around the environment, with a gradual decrease in positioning accuracy over time if no corrections are applied. By monitoring the radio signal fingerprints and magnetic anomalies (and probably more metrics in the future) the system can recognize when it is back in a location it has been in before, and this provides corrections to the system and increases the accuracy. Over time, the inside environment is mapped out automatically as the user moves around, rather than requiring manual surveying. The system runs in a Bayesian framework, specifically DPSLAM (be careful googling that, DP means things other than ?Distributed Particle? out in cyberspace!), and so there is a kernel used to score the fingerprints when comparing current measurements with old ones and a particle filter tracking a large set of hypotheses. For more details, see my ION paper. Fingerprints can indeed change over time ? people might move a filing cabinet, or suddenly lots of people might all fill a room for an announcement, or someone might accidentally put their car through a wall. This is accounted for in two ways ? the fingerprints naturally age over time, so the longer it has been since you have visited a location, the less confidence that is placed in that fingerprint. Secondly, the system is driven by the smartphone-grade inertial measurement set, so if the fingerprints in a given region have changed, the position estimate can still freewheel through that location and provide an estimate to the user, and the old measurements can be replaced by the new ones.

In standard smartphone-based fingerprinting the current measurement set is compared to a huge database and the user is hurled to whatever location has the best fit. So a sudden change in the real fingerprints means you might not find a match, or suddenly be hurled to the wrong place. This can?t happen with indoor NAVSOP, the core inertial sensing set drives the user around, and the radio and magnetic measurements provide corrections when applicable ? the effect of a change to fingerprints in a region results in the system freewheeling through that location and replacing the old fingerprints with the new ones.

    Privacy
    by girlintraining
It would seem that to use this technology, the client would need to have a much larger datastore than with GPS: Whereas only the positions of the GPS satellites need to be known to make a calculation, the dataset here is in the many thousands to millions. In addition to the data required for map storage, it would seem any implimentation of this would require an internet connection to download the data in a geographically-restricted fashion. This opens the door to privacy issues that standalone GPS clients do not have. How do you plan on addressing the privacy issue with your product?

Dr. Faragher: The idea is that you don?t need to rely on an existing database, or a datalink to access it, the system can build up its own understanding of the environment as it learns. It is possible to encrypt this information to prevent a user from accessing, sharing, or reading the content. The system only uses the publically-accessible downlink synchronization information broadcast by all fixed masts to allow normal devices (DAB radios, DVB-T televisions, etc) to synchronise with them and start using them. No data content is gathered by the system, and there is nothing interesting in the data content for radio positioning anyway as by definition is it unpredictable content. NAVSOP relies on transmitters broadcasting repetitive and known structures in their synchronization fields, equivalent to the PRN sequences from GPS satellites. NAVSOP goes looking for these repetitive structures in the radio bands expected to be the downlink bands for the different signal types. Signal content that doesn?t repeat in a predictable fashion (i.e. the data content) is useless and not captured.

What is the range of frequencies?
    by Anonymous Coward
Years ago during world war 2, pilots flying at night used dead reckoning, and followed two other signals, one from the north of England, and one from the south of England. One was called cat, and the other mouse. Cat chased mouse. Hyperbolic curves plotted on maps meant that when the signals were a certain distance apart, you were a certain distance from them (and using loop antennas gave a rough direction to each, given that the signal is strongest when the antenna is orthogonal to the EM radiation). It eventually became LORAN. HF radio direction finding usually involves "ELEPHANTS CAGES" like Pusher HF-DF Wullenweber "BULLSEYE" antennas, etc. These are very large because of the physics involved. To keep your unit small, how do you get around these challenges? Can you use HF frequencies or are you limited to VHF/UHF? I ask because the range of some of these signals (WIFI) is very small, cell phone signals are likewise less than 20 miles, TV is good for about 50 miles. When you are at sea, on the sea, unless you get backscattering, you don't get any of these (and the frequencies are too high to refract on the ionisphere, ie no 'skip'). HF will refract, but then we are talking about physics and size. An aircraft can get signals from much further, but you would still rely on a lot of dead reckoning over much of the worlds oceans.

Dr. Faragher: World War Two did indeed result in a host of radio positioning technologies, any anyone wishing to learn more about them and about the developments in radar and electronic warfare should read R.V. Jones? excellent book ?Most Secret War?. NAVSOP certainly has its roots in these early technologies. We have exploited signals as low as Long Wave, and looked into the use of VLF signals for very longe range radio navigation, although the accuracy drops off considerably at these wavelengths. The old Russian ALPHA positioning system at around 10 kHz also appears to still be functioning and that provides extensive coverage across more than half of the globe. eLoran operates at 100 kHz and there are some quite compact H-field antennas for those receivers. We have used an active E-field whip antenna for LW and MW (just like the antenna on your car that can pick up AM MW radio). There are useable signals from LEO satellites and airliners when in particularly remote locations. It is also possible to determine the time of arrival of signals from a digital transmitter such as a DVB TV transmitter at much greater distances than it is possible to decode data, due to coherent integration of repetitive timing markers. Consider that GPS signals are transmitted at around 50-100W and are 20,200km away. And thanks to coherent integration and correlation gain, they are useable by the time you pick them up (at around a quadrillionth of a Watt). The same principles can be applied to DAB, DVB, and cellular signals, to permit their utilization at very large distances, given line of sight (and so enough altitude).

    spoofing
    by demonbug
Following the downing of an American drone in Iran the hypothesis was put forward that the Iranians spoofed the GPS signal and convinced the drone that it wasn't where it thought it was in order to get it to land in Iran (I'm not sure if this was ever confirmed). A recent issue of Aviation Week reported on a group I believe in the U.S. working on the same idea, spoofing the GPS signal in a transparent manner to convince an autonomous vehicle that is was somewhere other than its actual location. Would NAVSOP make it more difficult to accomplish this sort of spoofing?

Dr. Faragher: As NAVSOP learns about the opportunistic signals in the environment, and calibrates them for use, it becomes less dependent on GPS. It reaches a point where it treats GPS with an air of suspicion and is capable of flagging up spoofing. If GPS suggests I am going one way, but DAB, DVB, cellular, MW, etc all suggest I?m going a different way (and suddenly there is much more power in the GPS band than there should be) then it is a strong indicator of GPS spoofing.

    When technology changes
    by Anonymous Coward
Seems like a great alternative to GPS in most casual situations, or as an addition to it for faster position locks while driving. The question I have is, as technology changes, such as the changing of the cell phone signals to differing frequencies as they increase speed.. ie, 4g, LTE,...etc or OTA TV switching to digital.. Will this still work? Or would people have to replace their "non gps navigation unit" when various signals that this relies on for positioning stop, or change frequencies? We've seen a lot of changes already so we know that things can change very rapidly and perhaps in unexpected directions.

Dr. Faragher: Changing frequencies is not a big deal, as there are already a lot of frequencies to search over all the time anyway, but the appearance of a new synchronization marker (e.g. DVB-T changing to T2) or appearance of a brand new network (e.g. LTE) will be important. It is certainly sensible in this day and age to permit a device like this to be upgradeable via software or firmware tweaks. In principle a device could employ a full ?blind search? mode where it searches everywhere for new repetitive structures and creates clean templates of new structures for itself, but the cost of the development and deployment of this piece of code would greatly outweigh its usefulness in the commercial sector, since that bit of code may only need to be run once or twice every ten years. An upgrade over the internet is much more sensible!

    Galactic GPS using pulsars
    by wisebabo
So I seem to remember a proposal to use pulsars to provide a sort of galactic GPS. (Pulsars, spinning neutron stars, are extremely stable periodic emitters of radio waves at interstellar distances). I think this might be what an earlier poster was referring to for spacecraft navigation, I believe they were used on the famous Pioneer 10 plaque (with the naked humans) to show aliens where we live.

Anyway, what's the accuracy for this (the previous poster mentions several hundred meters over hundreds of kilometers but I don't know if it's the same system)? Is it as good as (terrestrial) GPS? Will it be good enough to use for the upcoming GAIA mission which will map the 3D location of a billion stars in our galaxy?* (The positioning requirements of that mission are borderline insane!). Is there any way to use these celestial beacons as (another) GPS backup or are the signals far too weak (or unstable or blocked by our atmosphere or are in already used radio bands). Sorry about the more than one questions but they're all related. :)

*actually since most (all?) of these pulsars are within our galaxy maybe they are not far enough away to have no apparent motion (in which case they would be hard for GAIA to use as a reference). Are there any extra-galactic sources (Quasars?) that could serve a similar function?

Dr. Faragher: Professor Tony Hewish, Nobel-Prize-winning co-discoverer of the pulsar (and coincidentally my old PhD supervisor?s old PhD supervisor!) proposed the use of pulsars for extra terrestrial navigation over three decades ago, so like terrestrial radio positioning, pulsar navigation is certainly not a new idea. The expected accuracy is around the 10km mark. Pulsar navigation could not be exploited on Earth because radio pulsars require very large antenna arrays for detection (Hewish?s and Bell?s array was the size of two football pitches), and the signals from x-ray pulsars (smaller antennas required) do not penetrate the atmosphere. They are going to stick GAIA at one of the Earth-Sun Lagrange points (L2) and from there the stellar map will be generated using parallax as the observatory orbits the sun with us every year. GAIA will probably be tracked from Earth using Delta-DOR or even just traditional radio ranging to provide positioning relative to Earth with much higher accuracy than pulsar positioning could. Delta-DOR exploits quasars rather than pulsars to provide its differential positioning corrections.

On the fly mapping with environmental data
    by mattr
You mentioned earlier the domination of signal strength when indoors. Can you also use patterns in observed environmental data for automated mapping and exploration?

For example a robot exploring a cave or a large indoor structure like a power plant might be able to even use information such as ambient temperature / humidity, echoic nature of surroundings, or patterns in ambient air pressure / acoustic input from machinery or the sound of treads against floor.

Also someone was skeptical about using stars to navigate in the day. However radio telescopes can make observations in the daytime, which seems to be the ultimate sensor for your platform. Would your system work to find landmarks underwater too?

Dr. Faragher: Other metrics could indeed be useful if they can be assumed to be relatively stable over time while varying on a fine spatial scale. Stellar cameras can provide positioning estimates accurate to a few hundred metres today, and still operate in the daytime by exploiting infrared sensing, in fact they can even see through thin cloud in this mode (an example of a modern stellar navigator). Radio sensing of stars requires quite big antennas, although of course when you are listening to static on your FM radio, some of what you are hearing is the cosmic microwave background of the universe!

The same learning principles exploited by NAVSOP have already been exploited in the underwater domain ? have a google for bathymetric simultaneous localization and mapping.

    Sensor fusion
    by Arthur B.
In order to combine all the sources of information, are you relying on a messy approach, something based on many signature machine learning algorithms (think boosting, SVNs, random forests etc) or are you writing an explicit generative model for the noise and then applying filtering to it, with a particle filter for instance?

Dr. Faragher: We use a mixture of bespoke Bayesian estimators for multipath mitigation, Error State/Unscented/Extended/Gaussian-Mixture-Model-multiple-hypotheses Kalman filters, particle filters, and batch processing methods, depending on the exact application, set of signals, and hardware.

    Regulatory approval?
    by k(wi)r(kipedia)
Wouldn't this thing require a whole slew of regulatory approvals since you'd be fishing for different types of signals? Or would this involve mere processing of data already available to, say, the smartphone armed with this technology?

Dr. Faragher: The measurements we make are the same performed by a cellphone during the initial stages of registering on a network, or a DAB/DVB receiver starting up and picking up the beginning of message frames to decode data. These synchronization procedures are all freely accessible within the publicly-available specifications documents defining how a receiver for each signal type works. Your cellphone already makes the same main measurements we do, as do your DAB and DVB tuners, we just make more precise measurements and process them within a positioning engine. We don?t access any of the data content (see related previous question).

your best guess on the GPS successor?
    by Sem_D_D
Hi, Dr Ramsey! What is your best estimate as to what is the US DOD?s current GPS backup system?

IIRC Obama cut the budget for LORAN around 2010 and till then the system was financed with the explicit explanation and purpose - GPS backup. But no more... I am currently teaching ECDIS systems to mariners and I always emphasize the weaknesses of GPS under jamming. Ever since Selective Availability has been switched off, the jamming topic pops up more and more as a soft spot of the whole process, so I think we are not fooling ourselves that the US would let down such a gaping hole in its systems uncovered...

Dr. Faragher: I?m afraid I can?t speculate on what anyone else might be using within their multisensor navigation systems. Typical sources that everyone in the navigation game knows about are inertial measurements, non-satellite radio aids, visual aiding (inferring velocity and heading changes by tracking the scenery with cameras as you move), stellar cameras, and map matching. It is certainly critical to have redundancy, and multiple aiding sensors with different failure modes. I think for low-value assets a combination of visual aiding and non-GNSS radio sources could provide good GPS backup in many scenarios. I also think gravitational aiding (see first question) is a really exciting area of research and development in this field and maturing the cold atom technology will be a really important development for GPS-denied navigation.

    Most Surprising Correction?
    by eldavojohn
I'd imagine a lot of positioning calculations involve accounting for or adjusting for known effects or noise. For example, accounting for general relativity in GPS. What is the most surprising correction you've ever come across (even on an exam or done in theory)? Have you ever found yourself saying "I didn't think that could affect the calculations so much."

Dr. Faragher: I would say the most fascinating aspect I have come across is the modern method of accounting for the Earth?s gravitational field properly. In really long distance navigation, such as for submarines or intercontinental aircraft, if you are relying on just inertial measurements then accounting for the Earth?s gravitational field properly can make a huge difference to the performance of the navigation solution. Basically the effect of gravity must be removed from the measurements by using the gyroscopes to determine your orientation relative to the surface of the Earth, then applying a gravity correction to the accelerometer measurements. There are a few issues resulting from this ? your estimate of ?up? from the gyros carries an error, and your estimate of the exact magnitude and direction of the local gravitational field will also be erroneous. The result is a significant contribution to the increase in error over time suffered by inertial navigation systems. In the last couple of decades people have looked at using gravitational gradiometers and gravimeters to provide a set of measurements directly to an inertial navigation system to take some of the guesswork out of the process of accounting for gravity, with excellent results (look up the work on gravitational INS aiding on the USS Memphis, e.g. http://www.navy.mil/navydata/cno/n87/usw/winter99/waterfront.htm), including the development of a nearly-unbelievable ?gravitational sonar? system, using gravity to sense and image the terrain around the submarine. The initial research was performed in the 1990s but there is currently a big push in developing cold atom interferometer inertial navigation systems to provide a big step forward in inertial navigation based on a combined gyro+accelerometer+gravitational sensing technology.

GeekDad questions the need for active gaming (Wired UK)

While watching BBC2's The Men Who Made Us Fat the other night, trying not to dwell on the outsized portion of crisps I was eating slouched in front of the TV, I heard an interesting statistic.

They referenced a study that had used a belt attached accelerometer, not unlike the Wii Remote, to measure activity in children. The study concluded that "Children are no less active today than 30 years ago", eloquently elucidated by the narrator.

While the point the programme was making was about the relationship between eating and obesity -- that it wasn't because of inactivity but over-eating that our population has a growing weight problem -- it to be the opposite to what I had heard in relation to video games.

Wasn't all the increased screen time from TV, DVD's and video games supposed to be greating a nation of inactive youngsters who needed to be persuaded to get off the couch at every opportunity? Could it be that all those active video games are not actually unneeded? Do we need to stop worrying about our children turning into couch potatoes?

My instinct is that there must be some truth in the health benefits of active gaming, but I had assumed that kids were become steadily more inactive. The quoted study said the exact opposite.

The issue for our family is more about a balanced life than health. We limit screen-time on video games and TV because it forces us to do other things. Perhaps the issue with games isn't that they make us too sedentary but make us too boring.

I think it's a strange time to be a parent as these different technologies battle for our time, money and attention. Variety seems to be the order of the day here, which causes more than a few arguments in our household from time to time -- various offspring refusing to join in the family activity. My hope is that all this hard work will be worth it and they'll look back and thank us once they are interesting, well rounded adults.

    Fingers crossed.

Real Relationships: How Deep Are You?

    Proverbs 24:26
An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips.

    Communication...

It's a pretty big deal to most people and one that I've received a lot of questions about.? It's essentially what relationships are made of- but ironically, it's the one thing many people have no idea how to do.

I once read an article by my good friend and coworker Steve, describing levels of communication.? I loved it so much that I use my own form of this model in a lot of my counseling appointments.?

You see, to every relationship there will always be the potential for three levels of communication.?

Level 1- Facts:? This is the by far the easiest level.? It's the form of communication that focuses in on the facts, and zooms out on the self.? It's one that is so basic that it can involve even a complete stranger.? "What's the weather like outside?"? "What did you do today?"? "Who won last night's game"? It comes in the form of superficial facts- the who, what, where, when, and why's of your life.? No vulnerability, no depth, just facts.?

Level 2- Ideas: Level 2 takes you a little deeper.? It's a little more of you involved in the conversation because it acknowledges your opinions and your ideas.? Your likes and dislikes.? It's a little harder to engage in this kind of communication, unless you feel some sort of power within a relationship.? Because in level 2, you are letting down your guard just a tiny bit more.? Instead of just talking about last night's score, you talk share about your favorite team.? Instead of just telling the facts about your day, you share your hopes and dreams for tomorrow. ??

Level 3- Feelings: ? I think this is my favorite level.? It makes sense though.? As a counselor, I find myself engaging in level 3 hour upon hour with my clients and their families.? Level 3 is the deepest level, digging right into the heart.? It's the part of communication that digs through the surface of level 1, and then burrows into the depths of level 2 until it finds it's way to the most vulnerable place of all.? It takes a lot to identify and acknowledge feelings.? And it takes even more to share them.? Fear, embarrassment, insecurity.? Joy, excitement, surprise.? Sadness, anger, and hurt.?

This is the level that most relationships are missing.? This is the level of which most communication is lacking.?

It's amazing how many clients I see who identify that they've never really engaged in level 3 with their loved ones.? That it's awkward and uncomfortable, unnatural and difficult.?

But in order for relationships to be significant you have to go deep.? And in order to go deep in relationships...you have to do the work.

Don't get me wrong.? You can't live in Level 3.? I know sometimes I wish I could.? My husband will sometimes joke with me after a long conversation filled with "feelings" talk that we've been in level 3 way too long and that it's "Time to come up for air, Deb..."

But you know what, he's so right.? Level 3 can be exhausting if you don't have balance.? Sometimes you have to come back up to level one, because that's what life is made of essentially.? A healthy relationship knows the value of every level of communication, and will work it's way through the levels all throughout the day. ??

So go grab your loved one, and practice digging deep into the 3 levels of communication.

    Happy Talking :)
